The plate where the installed identity fails.
For each author, the image that matters is the one showing the character at the moment the identity they were given stops working. Not the establishing shot. Not the triumph.
That selection rule makes the images a corpus rather than decoration. It is the same rule the writing school applies to texts, applied to pictures: find the moment of failure, because that is where the information is.
Every image here is checked for licence before it is used. Absence of a copyright notice on a jpeg is not evidence of public domain, so the licence string as returned by the source is recorded for each file. An image whose licence cannot be verified is not used.
Every image also carries a style sheet with the full axis set and a content hash, so that two images cannot be silently treated as the same kind of picture. A prompt is not a style sheet.
Open. Four plates verified so far, including the first-edition frontispiece for one novel. The rest of the shelf is not yet fetched.
Corpus status. open. 1800-1910 public-domain illustration. Every image carries a licence record and a style sheet.
